Key Responsibilities of the Medical Transportation Driver

In this role, you will have a variety of duties that involve transporting patients and maintaining vehicles. Here are some of the key responsibilities:

Non-Emergency Medical Transportation: Your primary responsibility will be driving department vehicles, including BLS ambulances and wheelchair vans, to transport patients safely to and from medical appointments, ensuring their comfort and safety during the ride.

Vehicle Maintenance: You will assist with the preparation and maintenance of medical transportation vehicles, ensuring they are clean and properly equipped before each trip. This includes checking that all necessary equipment is in place and functioning.

Documentation: You will document all patient interactions and services provided using the approved electronic Patient Care Report (ePCR) system. Accurate record-keeping is essential to ensure quality care and compliance with regulations.

Providing Assistance as Needed: In addition to driving, you may be required to assist patients with entering or exiting the vehicle, providing comfort during the ride, and helping with other basic tasks as needed.

Qualifications and Requirements

Education: A high school diploma or equivalent is required. While no prior medical experience is necessary, candidates must be willing to learn and grow in the role.

Driving Requirements: To qualify for this position, candidates must meet the Minnesota Department of Transportation (DOT) Specialized Transportation Service (STS) driver requirements, which include:

  • A clean driving record with no history of license suspension or revocation.

  • No history of driving under the influence of alcohol or controlled substances.

  • Successful completion of a DOT physical examination and MN DOT STS Driver Training within 45 days of hire.

Certifications: You will need to obtain AHA BLS Healthcare Provider certification within 3 months of hire, and you must stay in compliance with all required certifications as a part of your role.
